CCARC club members have undertaken a GMRS service repeater project. GMRS, or General Mobile Radio Service, is a radio service intended for the general public. You do need a license to use a GMRS repeater, but there’s no test involved – only a $35 fee for a 10 year license.
Nationally there has been significant interest in adding GMRS as a resource for CERT Teams and other groups involved in EmComm communications. Operating from Rockton Mountain, this new repeater would fill in a large
coverage void in Clearfield County and provide an alternate mode for the general public to access.
A Kenwood TKR-750 repeater has been made available for use in this project. Other needed equipment is in the process of being procured. At this point it’s expected the new repeater will be operational within the next sixty days.
